The Papaveraceae is the name of the family of poppy plants in which the papaver participates, their family is very numerous, and there are some natural breeds that are more ordinary than others. The papaver are usually called poppies, so that’s what they mean when you hear this Now you know why it is harder to find someone that asks for papaver than finding someone that asks for poppies but they are the exact same thing. Besides the name is catchy and I’m pretty sure you won’t forget it.

The papaver is divided into different kinds, sometimes separated in ranks by he time each one lives or blossoms; some are annuals, some biennials or perennials. There are six kind of papaver that are the most usual.

We have the Papaver Somniferum (that is one of the best known, not by its scientific name that’s for sure), but by the name of Opium poppy. That’s right, this is the only kind of papaver that is illegal to grow, because of the alkaloid chemicals it contains that if not used correctly, it could result in severe damage against people’s health. But don’t get scared, there are also other kinds of papaver plants that you can grow. The Papaver Nudicaule, known as the Iceland poppy, this perennial plant needs plenty of sun to grow up, just as the country, this flower loves sun and wants it to grow up. If you really want to see a beauty of the papaver family, well then you will have to undoubtedly choose the perennial Oriental poppy, scientifically known as the Papaver Orientale, that blooms for only a few weeks it is huge and intense pink to red orange color. They give a garden an outstanding look. Also you have the Caucasus poppy, which’s scientific name is Papaver commutatum; the Papaver eschscholtzia; that is the California poppy, the California state flower in the United States and lastly the Papaver rhoes, known as the Shirley poppy that is a double flowered plant.

There are no special treatments for the family of the papaver, just what you would normally do with other plants, they need of course water to live, sun light to grow and soil to root themselves.

And a tip just for you to know, when the flower blooms, be sure to pull out the flower bud that contains the seeds of the plant, because if you don’t, you will have the next season a huge papaver garden that will grow out control.
